This Week on The Grid: Fixing Composition with Photoshop & Generative Expand

Sometimes an image needs a better edit. Other times, the composition itself needs a little help. This week on The Grid, Scott Kelby and Erik Kuna tackle both during another round of Blind Photo Critiques.

As they review landscapes, portraits, wildlife, travel, astrophotography, street photography, and more, Scott demonstrates how cropping, masking, gradients, and targeted adjustments can help simplify a frame and put more attention where it belongs.

One particularly useful Photoshop technique comes into play when an image was shot too tight. Scott demonstrates how Generative Expand can add the needed breathing room around a subject and rescue a composition that would otherwise be difficult to fix with a traditional crop. He also works through washed-out images, color adjustments for creating a golden-hour feel, and selective edits designed to guide the viewer’s eye.

The common thread through all of these techniques is knowing what you want the viewer to see. Once you’ve identified the subject, Photoshop and Camera Raw give you plenty of ways to minimize distractions and strengthen the overall image.
