Perfect! I needed an attention grabber for the first day of an advanced Photoshop class I’m teaching at a local college soon. This will open up the student’s minds to the possibilities of 3D in Photoshop. And I can see if they can actually follow instructions.

You never let me down Corey! Thanks!

Uber-cool! I’m not really into 3D, just photography, but tutorials like this really make me want to learn more about the 3D features of Photoshop. Great tutorial indeed!

All right, I give up… how in the world did you figure all of that out??? Ultra cool, and now that you’ve done the heavy lifting, not very difficult at all for us to replicate. But, how you figured all the math in doing that is pretty remarkable. Thanks!

Neato! Used layer masking to create boring tables & forms for a while – never thought about trying this. Too cool – thanks for showing

If anyone is having issues trying to work out the mapping of the texture you can try painting little markings directly on the 3d object in diffuse mode. Then open the diffuse texture and use the markings to work out where to start placing the lines.

Once you have you texture you can then use this in the opacity texture.

    Hope this helps

That’s really cool Barker, but I just use the double helix preset that sits in there with the hat and doughnut shape etc. What you didn’t look there first? LOL

I am completely joking of course! 😉 Corey your 3D skills ROCK!

Can you just tell us how you got the light to bounce off the edge of the DNA strand like you did in the final photo on the home page?

After I create the white sections in my extrusion material, save and go back to the DNA helix the update in the extrusion creates a second DNA helix right next to the original. Lots of hours wasted on this one. Personally, I think it might help a little if we could see the left side of Cory’s menu (tools). Maybe my machine is left-handed like me.

I would love to see the tutorials but on every browser I try I only see the pre-loader and it keeps loading but won’t start.

Does anyone has the same problem? and how to fix?

    Thank you in advance, GG1

Hi Corey! First, I just want to congratulate you!! You are an amazing artist. I’m a filmmaker but graphic design is one of my favorite hobbies. I actually use it a lot in editing. Recently I needed a DNA for a brochure and I couldn’t figure out how to do it in Photoshop. I ended up getting one from Internet. But that one is far from being as nice as the one you’ve created. Now I’ll try to replace it. Once again, you are a very talented artist. I hope someday you come to California to give some workshops. Thank you!!!

Hey Corey, I’m having kind of a silly problem: once I create the shape as you suggested I create the second layer 50 % gray and the path dissapears. I can’t make it active therefore I can follow the tutorial. Any help? Thanks.

Finally got it working. For some reason the measurements for the opacity mask were completely different, despite using the exact document settings as in the tutorial.

In the end it’s just down to a lot of trial and error.
